Psyllium fiber alternatives?

I had a small bowel resection a few months ago and am now suffering from what by all accounts seems to be an overgrowth of yeast / low intestinal flora. I'm following the diet recommendations, including garlic and probiotic supplements. I'm wondering if it's ok to take polyethylene glycol to help soften stools? I have IBS with constipation and my doctor recommended psyllium fiber, but I've read that may feed intestinal yeast. Your advice is most appreciated!
